Nicole Fenton is an editor, strategist, and writing teacher. She is the coauthor of Nicely Said: Writing for the Web with Style and Purpose and the editor of several books about design. Previously, she was a senior content strategist at Facebook, Lab Zero, and Mule Design in San Francisco. She started her professional writing practice at Apple, where she served as communications lead for five years. You can find her in Brooklyn.

Interface Writing Workshop
We all know that words mean things, but how often do we take the time to consider the language in our design systems? In this workshop, we’ll look at how strings, labels, forms, and flows shape the user experience.
We’ll talk about real-world examples, define writing principles for your team, and work through several activities you can use with clients and colleagues.
You'll learn how to:
* Keep apps and websites focused with clear, useful interface writing (i.e., form fields, navigation labels, prompts, instructions)
* Take international readers, character limits, and house style into account as you write
* Guide readers through multipart interfaces and reduce drop-off within a flow
* Develop copy variations for prototypes and user testing
* Adapt your tone to fit the reader’s needs and situation

Words shape our ideas, how we see the world, and how we relate to each other. In this session, Nicole will talk about writing—an often invisible partner and material in the design process. You’ll learn how to communicate behind the scenes to define what you’re making, prototype quickly, gather consensus, build clarity, and ship meaningful products.
